Science Class 8 SEE Model Paper 1 (https://gyanpankh.com/)

  1. Why potassium permanganate spread throughout water after some time as shown in picture?
Science Class 8 SEE Model Paper 1 (https://gyanpankh.com/)

Answer: This happens because of diffusion. The particles of potassium permanganate are constantly moving. They move from a region of high concentration (where the crystal was) to regions of low concentration (the rest of the water) and mix with the particles of water. This continuous movement causes the potassium permanganate to spread evenly throughout the water.

Section C

  1. Object A has a mass of 250 g and a volume of 50 cm³. Object B has a mass of 280 g and a volume of 70 cm³. Calculate the density of object A and object B. Which object is denser?

Answer:

Density of A = Mass / Volume = 250 g / 50 cm³ = 5 g/cm³

Density of B = Mass / Volume = 280 g / 70 cm³ = 4 g/cm³

Object A is denser (5 g/cm³) than object B (4 g/cm³).

  1.  0 0 @ 0 0 @                      0 represents sulphur

      @ 0 @ @ @                         @   represents iron

a) Is this a mixture or compound? Give reason
b) A magnet is brought near the above substance. What will happen? Why?
c) If heating the above substance, what will form?
Answer:
a) It is a mixture. The reason is that the symbols show sulphur and iron particles are simply intermingled and not chemically combined. Their individual properties can still be observed.
b) When a magnet is brought near the mixture, the iron filings will be attracted to the magnet. This is because iron is a magnetic material, and in a mixture, it retains its magnetic property.
c) If this mixture is heated strongly, the iron and sulphur will react chemically to form a new compound called Iron Sulphide.

Science Class 8 SEE Model Paper 1

Section E

  1. Why is the sun considered the ultimate source of energy for all living organism?
  2. Why are producers always placed at the beginning of the food chain?
  3. Write two biotic and two abiotic components found in pond ecosystem.

Answer:

  1. The Sun is the ultimate source of energy because all living organisms depend on it directly or indirectly. Plants (producers) trap solar energy to make food through photosynthesis. All other organisms (consumers) get this energy by eating plants or eating other animals that have eaten plants. Without the sun, there would be no energy to start this cycle.
  2. Producers are always placed at the beginning of a food chain because they are the only organisms that can convert solar energy into chemical energy (food). They are the autotrophs that manufacture their own food, which then becomes the source of energy and matter for all other organisms (heterotrophs) in the chain.
  3. In a pond ecosystem:

Biotic components (living): Fish, Aquatic plants (like algae and Hydrilla), frogs, insects.

Abiotic components (non-living): Water, Sunlight, soil, oxygen dissolved in water.

  1. An ecosystem cannot function with only producers because matter and nutrients would not be recycled. When producers die, the decomposers break down their dead remains and release nutrients back into the soil/water. These nutrients are then used again by the producers. Without decomposers, nutrients would be locked up in dead bodies, and producers would eventually run out of raw materials. Consumers are also part of the energy flow.
